Chapter Fifteen - The Otherworlders
But the following day was nothing like I expected. It was only half-way through the morning when Nadin came back to get us. Apparently the Breaker had been quite specific. It had to be me and Albany. And we had to come to the ruling house immediately.
I asked the others to let Benedar know. When they returned to the cave for the half-day meal, he’d be waiting, desperate for more details about what I’d learned the night before.
He’d been fast asleep when I got back, and there’d hardly been time to tell him anything when we all woke up. When he heard about the second container in the boxes, he’d been full of questions.
The others had been more interested in the magic energy, wishing that they could go to the edge of the island and touch a Flyer right then and there. The prospect of spending the day scrubbing and cleaning instead had disappointed everyone.
Albany and I followed Nadin back to the centre of the city. I was really nervous. Had the Breaker found out about my meeting with Alanna the night before? Had I dragged Albany into something that wasn’t his fault?
When we arrived, Nadin directed us to a room we knew only too well. We had spent a long time watching the Breaker torture Zack and the other Thinkers behind that door.
With an apologetic look, Nadin left straight away. The Breaker acted pleased to see us, and that made me even more nervous. He beckoned us into the room. When he opened his mouth, I flinched, certain he was going to say the Initiation Word.
Then I noticed the boy from yesterday. He was glaring at the Breaker. I was shocked. His spirit, when he must know it was pointless, was quite remarkable.
There was a girl with him. She had long brown hair, large brown eyes, and a very downcast expression. She was wearing a purple top with white writing on it and brightly coloured shoes with thick purple string laced across them.
She had no star on her clothes. But then I noticed some silver stars in her ears that were just like the one on the boy’s shirt. Maybe it was some kind of bond between them.
I saw all of this in quick sideways glances, too scared to look directly at them in case it angered the Breaker. He only had to say the Initiation Word, and I’d be joining them.
“Just in case, hmmm?” the Breaker said, his voice smooth.
“Any attempt you make to escape, and I will bind them with you. Then you’ll carry the weight of their life essences on your conscience.”
I froze in shock, staring at the floor. My life was now in the hands of these strangers? Albany’s too? What if they tried to run away?
Albany was sent to fetch two buckets of ocean water.
“In case you pass out on me,” the Breaker said to the otherworlders. He was lit up with anticipation. Much more than I’d ever seen him before, and that was saying something.
